Don't Buy a Sauna If You Want a Gadget: 5 Questions to Ask Yourself First

You already book the gym around the sauna. The habit is real; only the address is wrong. • 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born
  • Every price on our website, VAT and import duty included

A gadget gets bought for what it does. A sauna gets used for what it gives back: twenty minutes with the door closed and the phone on the kitchen worktop.

If the five answers below point the same way, book your free expert consultation and we will plan it properly with you, before you pay anything. If they do not point the same way, a sauna might not actually be for you.

  1. Will you actually use it?
  2. Where does it go?
  3. Who else uses it?
  4. What does it cost, with delivery, assembly and the electrician?
  5. Have you sat in one?

Why the first question is not the price

The short answer

The first question is the one nobody can answer for you.

Saturday there is a gym class you mostly go to for the fifteen minutes in the sauna afterwards; you book the gym around the sauna, not the class. There are screenshots on your phone with saunas in them, and nobody at home knows they exist yet. This page was written for you.

So the first question is not the price; the prices are in question four. The first question is the one nobody can answer for you. When owners describe what they bought, almost none of them describe a heater. They describe an evening:

Owner forum
Its become part of my evening routine. Go outside, get the sauna going, sit for a while without my phone, cool off, then head back inside. It's one of the few parts of the day where I'm completely unplugged.
One owner wrote, public sauna forum. Not a PlusLife customer.

So picture the Tuesday, not the brochure. 9pm, the house quiet, the phone on the kitchen worktop, and for twenty minutes nobody needs you. That is the whole product. If it reads as yours, keep going.

1Question one

Will you actually use it?

A buyer asked it plainly on a public sauna forum: "Hi all, been wanting to buy a 2 person sauna for my home. What's everybody's experience with buying one, did you use it enough to justify?" Notice the word: justify. Not afford. The worry is whether you will keep showing up.

Here is a fair test. Do you already have twenty minutes at the end of the day that you would happily spend behind a closed door with your phone somewhere else? Twenty minutes you already protect, or wish you could. And would you still be using it in August?

If you sit in the sauna at the gym most weeks, you have your answer, and you already know what is wrong with the habit: the drive, the timer on the tiled wall, the shared bench. The habit is real. The address is the problem. If you have never sat in one, hold this question open until number five.

The practical picture

  • A session is simple; what kills the habit is friction. The cabin comes up to temperature, you sit, the phone stays outside, twenty minutes later you shower. But a cold cabin and a wait on a tired night is how a sauna becomes an expensive coat rack.
  • On our traditional builds, the controls answer the wait. Every traditional sauna can be optioned with the Wi-Fi controller, at a premium, or comes with built-in controls, depending on the heater you pick; prices are on the website and confirmed on the call. Harvia is behind the app: schedule a session before you leave the office, it learns your cabin's heat-up time, and it tells you when the sauna is ready. A cheap Wi-Fi extender solves reach if the sauna sits far from the router.

One owner told us in our 2025 customer survey that she has slept better since it went in. Her experience, and it sits on decades of research, including the well-known Finnish studies, pointing to physical and mental benefits year-round; pair it with a cold plunge and you add the instant hot-cold contrast.

Notice what none of these owners talk about. Not the heater, not the wattage. Frequency. It is set by your evenings, not by any spec sheet, and a sauna earns its place through repetition, so answer this question honestly before you price anything.

The habit is real. The address is the problem.

2Question two

Where does it go?

Still not the price. Where in your house does twenty minutes with the door closed actually happen? For most people it is a spare room, a garage corner, or a corner of the back garden. The room decides the sauna far more often than the sauna decides the room.

Indoor or outdoor

Every sauna in our range is a traditional build made for the outdoors: a barrel like the Arc or the Cove, or a cabin like the Mini 2.0 or the Max 2.0. Outside, it sits on a level, load-bearing base with a power run from your consumer unit.

And any of them can also be used indoors: it is weatherproofed for outside, so it is more than at home inside, if a spare room or the garage suits you better. The room settles where it goes; question five settles whether the heat is for you.

The practical picture: five checks

  • Ceiling height. Indoors, a cabin is taller than you think. Height, footprint and weight are on each product page; on the call we read them against your room.
  • Footprint, including the door swing and somewhere to stand dripping.
  • The floor. Tiles or sealed concrete rather than carpet.
  • The power run. Your electrician needs a route from the consumer unit. The shorter the run, the smaller that bill.
  • The finishes. How the glass front and the timber sit against the room.
PlusLife Arc Barrel outdoor sauna in natural light timber with a glass door, on timber cradle feet
The Arc Barrel, the entry outdoor traditional. A level, load-bearing base and a power run is all it needs.

Bring a photo of the space to the call and we will tell you what fits. If no wall, floor and power run works yet, that is a renovation question first, and we will say so plainly.

3Question three

Who else uses it?

The short answer

It needs one person with a consistent evening, and everyone else is welcome to drift in.

You look after everyone. This one is allowed to be yours; say the quiet research out loud. It still matters for two reasons: size, and expectations set before the first evening, not after.

On size, be honest about the evenings, not the occasions. Buy for the Tuesday, not for the Christmas that happens once.

On expectations, two patterns come up in owner forums. Family time arrives unplanned, as a bonus nobody costed in. And a partner sometimes tries it once and decides the heat is not for them: an argument for question five, not against the sauna. It needs one person with a consistent evening, and everyone else is welcome to drift in. Buy it for the person who will actually use it, not to start a habit in someone who has shown no sign of wanting one.

Buy for the Tuesday, not for the Christmas that happens once.

The practical picture

  • A two to three person cabin, like the Mini Traditional 2.0, suits the person in it most nights, with room for one more. A four to six person cabin, like the Summit, suits a household genuinely in it together most weeks. Prices sit in question four.
  • Whoever joins you sits well. Benches in Aspen or Alder, knotless and smooth so you do not get burnt. Bench heights are set for proper loyly, so the whole cabin is heated.

Three questions only you can answer. The next two, we can help with.

Bring a photo of the space and your honest answer to question one. On the call we will tell you which format and size fits, and what your electrician will need to know.

Most people don't wake up one morning and decide to buy a sauna. It takes weeks, sometimes months, of research and discussion with your family. But meanwhile the ritual happens on someone else's bench, on someone else's clock. That cost is yours to weigh, not ours to push.

4Question four

What does it cost, with delivery, assembly and the electrician?

Every price is on our website, and the delivery charge shows at checkout. Here are the main ones as our store shows them today, then the lines the sticker does not include.

The practical picture: the sticker

  • PlusLife Mini Traditional 2.0 sauna cabin in honey timber with a tinted glass frontMini Traditional 2.0$11,990 to $14,990
  • PlusLife Max Traditional 2.0 outdoor sauna, rounded timber ring frame with a glass front and shingled roofMax Traditional 2.0$14,990 to $17,990
  • PlusLife Summit sauna, a square timber cabin with a black frame, a flat roof and a full glass frontSummit, four to six person$19,886
  • PlusLife Arc Barrel outdoor sauna in natural light timber with a glass doorArc Barrel, outdoor$7,990 to $8,990
  • PlusLife Cove Barrel outdoor sauna, wide barrel cabin in natural timberCove Barrel, outdoor$10,490 to $14,990
PlusLife Cove Barrel outdoor sauna in black timber with a tall tinted glass door and a shingled roof, standing in a meadow with trees behind
The Cove Barrel. Every sauna is made to order, with a typical lead time of 6 to 10 weeks from order to delivery.

The practical picture: the three lines after the sticker

  • Delivery and assembly. Delivery is kerbside to mainland Great Britain, and the delivery charge at checkout is the whole charge; if your postcode needs a quote, the price is fixed before we accept your order. Assembly is not included unless it is quoted separately, in writing.
  • The electrician. Every sauna is hard-wired to a dedicated circuit with RCD protection, and in a home that is notifiable work under Part P: an electrician registered with a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, working to BS 7671, makes the connection and gives you a certificate to keep. Electrical costs are not on the website because they vary by property.
  • Warranty, in writing. Five years on the cabin of the Mini 2.0, the Max 2.0 and the Meridian Barrel, and every model's term is published on our warranty page before you order, on top of your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If a seller cannot put a warranty term in an email, that is your answer about the seller.

The practical picture: what the sticker actually buys

  • Origin you can hold us to. Our saunas are handcrafted and 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born. A certificate of origin is available on request.
  • A heater you can look up, not a house-brand element. We partner with Harvia, the biggest sauna heater manufacturer in the world. Harvia is a publicly listed company, with options based on your usage and sauna size. Your model's heater is named in writing before you pay anything.
  • 42mm walls on the premium traditional line, and the why: thicker walls mean better insulation and faster heat-up. A plain number you can compare across brands.
  • Timbers are Thermo-Aspen and Thermo-Pine, thermo-treated for harsh climates, a wet British winter included.

If a seller cannot put a warranty term in an email, that is your answer about the seller.

And if you pay a gym membership mostly for the sauna, put that number next to these. The honest case for owning one is access, privacy and the timer, not the fee; if your answer to question one was yes, waiting has its own cost. And if how you pay would change your answer: you can pay in full when you order, or 50% then and the balance within 14 days.

A sale price should have a reason you can hear out loud; ask on the call and you will get ours. This purchase keeps; come back whenever you are ready.

5Question five

Have you sat in one?

In one line

We would still rather you sat in any sauna before you decide.

This one costs nothing to answer, yet hardly anyone answers it. If you already use the gym sauna, you have sat in one, and you know whether it is heat you want or an idea you like.

If you have not, sit in one before you decide anything. A friend's. A spa. A day pass at a gym with a sauna.

If the heat itself is your doubt, this is where it gets answered: by a bench, not by a brand. Twenty minutes tells you more than twenty tabs.

For what it is worth, plenty of our buyers never sat in one first. We would still rather you sat in any sauna before you decide.

Twenty minutes tells you more than twenty tabs.

When you do sit in one, here is what to notice.

The practical picture: how to tell whether the heat is yours

  • The heat. A traditional sauna heats the air, runs hot, and lets you pour water over the rocks for steam. On PlusLife's builds that means a Harvia heater sized to the cabin. It hard-wires, so your electrician runs a dedicated circuit to it.
  • The test buyers use on the forums. One put it as "I'm in it for the sweat, so whatever will maximize that is what I want." If that is you, a traditional sauna is built for exactly that, and twenty minutes on a bench settles it faster than any amount of reading.

On the call we will tell you which model fits your space and your evenings.

And if you sit in one and do not want to go back in, believe that; that is what the twenty-minute test is for.

Ask any brand the same five questions

Shortlisting more than one brand is the smart way to buy at this price. Whoever you talk to, ask these five out loud and get the answers in writing. We are happy to be measured on all of them.

Five answers, side by side

  • Are the prices public? Ours are, on every product page, no form to fill in first.
  • What happens if you change your mind after ordering? With us, cancel within 7 days of your order, before your build goes into production, and you get a full refund.
  • Is the electrician stated up front, or discovered afterwards? Up front, on this page and on the call.
  • Will they name the country it is built in, and put the warranty per model in writing? The whole traditional range is 100% built in Europe, including the Arc, Cove and Meridian. Our warranty is scoped per model rather than blanket; ask for the term of the one you are considering.
  • Who answers when something goes wrong? Ours is a UK support line and email, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm UK time. Most faults are sorted remotely from your photos and video; if not, we send an engineer or a replacement part, at our cost when the fault is covered.

If another brand answers all five as plainly, buy from whichever of us fits your house better. If they do not, you have your answer.

The questions most readers ask next

Do I need an electrician?

Yes, for every sauna, indoor or outdoor: each one is hard-wired, and a registered electrician completes the connection. It sits outside the sauna price because it depends on your consumer unit and the run. Most UK homes have a single phase supply and some heaters need three phase, so check your model's heater with us and your electrician before you order. We may recommend an electrician, and the work is agreed between you and them.

Do I need planning permission?

It depends on your site. Whether a garden sauna needs planning permission or building control approval is a question for your local authority, and checking it before the sauna arrives is your responsibility. Dimensions and weights are on each product page.

Is the price on the site the price I pay?

For the sauna, yes: the price is in pounds with VAT and import duty included, and you will not be asked for import duty, import VAT or customs charges on delivery. Delivery shows at checkout, and assembly and the electrician are the other lines, set out in question four.

How much of a weeknight does it actually take?

Plan on the heat-up plus twenty minutes on the bench and a shower. Heat-up is 20 minutes to an hour on average, depending on the temperature you want, and on the traditional builds the Wi-Fi controller can start the sauna before you leave work.

What actually happens on the call?

You bring the space (a photo helps) and your honest answer to question one. We talk through format, size and placement, what delivery looks like to your postcode and what your electrician needs to know. If a sauna is not right for your routine, we will say so. No quote to sign, no follow-up pressure.

Plan your wellness space. Free, by phone, and an honest answer at the end of it.

You have done the hard part, which was answering question one truthfully. Bring that, and a photo of the space, to a PlusLife specialist. We are founder-operated and family-run since 2021, and we still use our own saunas most days, so we know the difference between the one that gets used and the one that gets stored.

  • Which format and size fits your house and your routine
  • What delivery costs to your postcode
  • What your electrician will need to know, so they can quote before anything arrives
  • What the base and the route in from the kerb need to be ready
  • The lead time for the model you are considering

What happens when you click: you pick a time, a PlusLife specialist calls you at it, and a short call later you know which one, for your house, honestly. Then the other tabs can close.

Prefer to keep thinking? Normal for this purchase. This page will still be here when the house is quiet.
